Stunned by Sandra’s revelation minutes ago, Samiksha started recollecting the moments spent with her. She was amazed by the guard. Sandra had held on to this truth for so long. Wondering the reasons for the same, she questioned,
“Really? But you work for him. I mean, I have seen you doing works of, Um …”
“A Maid?”
Samiksha’s silence made her smile.
“Karan was not what he is today, Samiksha. He was very calm and introverted. I used to ask him his favourites and get them to make him happy. A certain guilt engulfed him from the moment he learned what his family business was. Even though our work was only to abduct people for money, without harming them physically. Karan used to get disturbed by the trauma the families might be going through whose member was kidnapped.
No amount of justification
provided solace to his disturbed mind. He was very reclusive and timid. His passion for music and singing was overshadowed by the guilt and conflict his mind suffered from. And one day he came happily to me. I tried to figure out the cause behind his joy.
He slowly told me that he saw a girl today, someone adorned with grace and beauty. She had come for a family vacation, and he saw her on a beach.
A heartbeat skipped, and Samiksha’s mind flooded with doubts and faint visions. She got up from the bench at once. Sandra continued.
“I have never seen such a combination
of innocence, beauty, and simplicity in anyone, he mentioned. He was in love. It was clearly visible in his eyes. His tone was never so joyful as well as restless. But sadly, the girl left the next day without mentioning her name or whereabouts. Strange, isn’t it? I don’t know why the girl did not accept his friendship. The Karan, I knew that time was unmatchable for me as a human. He still is. He has hidden himself behind several layers of harsh truths, a guilty conscience and a helpless destiny.
“What did the girl say to him? I mean, did she talk to him?”
“It’s funny what she said to my Karan. She would disclose her name to him if and whenever destiny ever brings them face to face.”
The confirmation Samiksha needed was in front of her. He was the same boy she had met two years ago at Forno Beach. She remembered every moment and recollected Karan’s face then and now.
While Samiksha was engrossed in recollecting the moments she spent with him two years ago, Sandra spoke,
“I wish that girl would come back someday. Maybe she will bring my old Karan back to me again. He will leave this life of crime and start living, laughing, and smiling again. Do you know how much he was in awe of her? When he met her the next day in a shop, she loved a necklace there. You won’t believe Karan has used the same design the necklace had to design the interiors of his room.”
“The same room where
you took me to meet him for the first time?”
“No, that is the room where he meets people. His room is on the 2nd floor. You will find the details of that necklace in the carvings of that room. So mesmerised he was by her.”
“But why did he choose this life then? He should have stuck to his morals. As you said, he was not like this before. It is so easy to fall into dark pits rather than choosing to stand strong and undeterred.”
“Is it so? Then why are you here? Go away.”
“I can’t.”
“Exactly. We cannot choose what should happen to us. Destiny chooses that for us. And we become mere puppets in its hands. You want to hear what transformed Karan from a music lover into an abductor?”
Instantly, Samiksha answered, “Yes.”
Sandra’s phone rang, demanding her presence elsewhere.
“I need to go. We have to leave.”
“But you did not tell me why he is what he is today.”
“You want to know?”
“Of course, yes.”
“Why?”
“Out of curiosity “
“Hmm. However, this reason is not enough to disclose an intense part of his life.”
Samiksha paused, struggling for words.
“I will tell you the reason behind this transformation, but only when you tell me why you are so curious.”
