Letters To God: Third part

Samiksha’s eyes were on the light indicator. As she was about to get up from the bench, a call for her distracted her flowing thoughts. It was from that floor’s enquiry section. She was required in her floor down immediately. Without a thought she rushed down. After some time when she finished her regular rounds, she saw Dr. Karan again.

“How is he now? I hope out of danger.” Samiksha asked him.
“Yes. The surgery was successful. Now he is in the ward on that floor itself. I am happy to see how concerned you are about the patients Samiksha.”
“Thank you doctor.” Samiksha replied with a smile.
“But Samiksha, cam I say something? I mean we barely know each other. Yet, I wish to say.”

“Go ahead.”

“You should nor invest so much in anyone so deeply. Enquiring about a patient is one thing, and worrying is another.”
Samiksha understood his point.
“Basically, I am an overthinker and an empath. So, I worry. It’s in my blood. Cannot help it. But I will remember what you said doctor. Noted.” She smiled and left from there.

Two weeks passed and Samiksha gelled with the hospital and it’s staff quite well. Especially with Karan, she developed a bond of trust and respect. He admired the fact that she never accepted an analysis just because it came from a senior. She questioned, probed and put forth her ideas. This was a rare trait in the interns.

A new case of a young girl got Samiksha and Karan in one team.

She was suffering from chronic pain in her stomach after an accident. Samiksha was to assist Karan in this surgery. As always, she differed in the treatment protocol before the surgery.

Karan argued with her with equal intensity. Finally, she gave in. The surgery was done and the girl was moved to the ward. She regained consciousness and thanked the doctors and nurse for taking care of her. Within some time, she suffered an unbearable pain. She was given injections and immediately moved to the OT.

Sadly, the girl could not survive.

Samiksha kept trying to bring her back to her senses. Using various methods, she tried to bring the girl back to life. Finally Karan shouted at her. “Stop it Samiksha. Vibha, please take her out from here, right now.”

Vibha held her hand and brought her out from the OT.

“See, I told him about the medications and he refused to listen. Poor girl.”

“Samiksha, the medications were right. You did not see? There was an internal problem which the sonography failed to detect and hence this happened . Why are you blaming Dr. Karan?”

“I know you will support him as usual. Following someone blindly will lead you all to a big mistake once.” Samiksha left angrily from there.

Later in the canteen, Vibha and Samiksha shared a coffee.

“Why do you lose temper so fast Samiksha? Always look at all the points before blaming anyone.”
“Now please don’t start it again. How sad her parents would be.”

“But Samiksha, everything is not in our hands. We tried our best. And in case you don’t know, Dr. Karan researched like insane because this case was little complicated. He consulted so many surgeons before the surgery.”

Samiksha got up and left the canteen area. As soon as she came out, Dr. Karan was right in front of her.

“It is so difficult for a family to face this. How are they going to… “

Dr. Karan hugged and pacified her. Samiksha was speechless.

“Don’t trouble yourself so much.

You have a bright future. How will you take care of patients if you react emotionally to every situation? Remember, you have to be full for filling others. Unless you have resilience and faith, how will you instill it in the patients? Tell me.”

Samiksha kept staring at him.
“I am sorry for how I reacted in the OT.”
“That is fine. You will slowly learn, not to involve so much that it breaks you. We have to deal with so many patients and their families. Unless we are strong, can we help them heal?”
Samiksha smiled and answered, “No. I will keep your words in mind.”
“Whose?”
She smiled again. “Mine.”

It was 7 pm. Maria called Samiksha in her cabin.

“Samiksha, you have to go to Dr. Karan’s house with these files. He left already. These are urgent ones. He needs to go through these.”
“Ok Maria. Give them to me.”
Samiksha rang the bell and waited outside the main door of Karan’s residence. He stayed near to the hospital in a bungalow. His maid opened the door.
“Dr. Karan?”
“You are Samiksha right? Please come in. He is in his study room.”
Samiksha entered the door and went straight to the study room along with his maid.
“Thank you so much Samiksha. Um, Simi, you can go. Please make food for Samiksha also.”
“No, I will go home and have, please do not trouble her.”
Simi smiled and replied, “It will be my pleasure to serve you.”

After she left, Karan spoke at once,

“I am sorry you had to bring these here. We both are working on these cases. So, I insisted you bring these files. I was not feeling well, so I left early. We have to be ready with diagnosis of these cases by tomorrow morning, hence I called you at a short notice.”

“It is alright, doctor. You don’t have to give so much explanation. Are you fine? You look very down.” She touched his forehead with her hand.
He backed off immediately.
“I am not used to so much caring and concern. Please.”
“You care for everyone back at hospital and you don’t deserve the same care? Why? Please take medicine first and then we will discuss the cases.”
“Then I will sleep and you will have to do the case study yourself. “

Samiksha smiled.  “No. You won’t. Please take care of yourself sir.”

They both worked on the case files and jotted down the diagnosis and the treatment procedures.

After work and dinner, Samiksha told him, “Sir, if you don’t mind, may I see your house? It is really beautiful.”
“Yes. Why not? Simi.? Karan called Simi and told her to take Samiksha on a tour of his house.
She appreciated the neatness combined with aesthetic sense in the aura of his home.
“I had heard from my friend that Dr. Karan has a lovely home. She was right.” Simi smiled at her.

“We are not seeing this room?” Samiksha asked Simi after seeing the entire home.

“No ma’am. We don’t go in this room. Only Dr. Karan sits here. Frankly, I never question him. It’s not good to probe into someone’s personal life. He is just a nice human being. It is enough for me. Let us move.”
Samiksha kept thinking though, what might be in that room. Curiosity entered her mind.
“I am leaving sir. You take care and come tomorrow only if you feel good.”

Karan laughed and replied, “I cannot rest when my patients need me there. See you tomorrow. Good night. My driver will leave you at your home.”

“No sir. I will go on my own.”
“Quiet. Do not argue for everything. It’s late. I would have myself dropped you.”
“No sir. Please go and rest. I will go with your driver.”

On the way to her home, Samiksha kept thinking only one thing. What might be in that room?
