Recently, I had a close association with cats. During the time I spent with them, certain traits of theirs amused me to a great extent. The lessons that these four-legged furry animals teach us are that knowledgeable humans are just out of this world—self-respected, practical, self-loving, and, most importantly, wise.
I would love to talk about the female cats, which are undoubtedly the centre of my article. After approximately two months, female cats come into heat, meaning they need mates. This heat can last from three days to a week. To get a male cat’s attention, they mew aloud, purr, and need pampering. They allow males to pamper them and care for them.
But
As soon as they are out of the heat, their behaviour takes a 360-degree turn. If any male tries to get near them, even by mistake, he invites fury in person. The female cats can scratch a male who is crossing his borderline in addition to a friendly lick. This scratch is not a simple one; it can lead the male’s skin to bleed. The female hisses, warning the male to stay at a safe distance. If he understands the warning, he is safe. Or else he has to face the fury of the female.
In short, if the female says ‘no’, she means ‘no’. I wish the male human gender could also understand a ‘no’ from the female. Unfortunately, he takes this no for granted many times, and mishaps take place. If a woman were blessed with sharp claws like a female cat, the man would dare not touch her forcibly or misbehave. But there is a thing to learn from these graceful female cats. If you wish to say no, just demonstrate. How to do it is a call women/ girls must take.
Now, let us study mother cats.
When the kittens are newborns, she keeps them well-fed and so clean that one would think they had a bath. But it’s their mother’s magic that keeps them clean and cute-looking as well. The twist comes when around six weeks pass.
The mother notices the kittens moving around and slowly becoming independent. She reduces their milk intake and gradually switches to other foods, such as fish or meat supplements. She starts distancing herself from these foods when they switch over to them.
Not because she is careless, but because she needs them to be independent and strong. She stops being next to them, being available to them so that the ties slowly break loose. She shows up occasionally now so that they are used to her absence. She might disappear entirely from their lives once she is sure they can feed themselves by obtaining food. ‘No strings attached’ is the motto female cats follow, honestly.
But I have observed
human mothers carrying the heavy school bags of their kids till grade 10. Sadly, the kids don’t care if their mom carries a 20 kg or 30 kg bag. The simple reason is that the mother doesn’t mind doing this work for them. Later, when the child starts going to college and then to work, some mothers give them the coffee mug in their hands, spoiling their habits and making them dependent on her.
After all, it is a mother’s heart, right? Give me a break. Are these mothers imparting self-discipline and dignity of labour to their kids? Sadly no. Motherhood is not just blindly showering love on the kid but also teaching him/her independence, self-respect and self-care. Female cat mothers definitely teach this to their kittens.
I won’t deny
that cats are known for their selfish nature. They are not loyal like dogs. But certainly, we can take something good from them.
Finally, as I conclude this article, let me highlight what humans can learn from the feline community. Unless we care for ourselves, we cannot do it for others. Love your children, but do not make them handicapped and dependent on you. Teach them to survive in this world fearlessly with their heads held high. Last but not least, teach your daughters that when you say ‘no, you must clearly demonstrate it through your words and actions. No doubt the heading of my article says ‘wisdom of cats’. You agree?
