The night was longer and darker than usual. Samiksha was unable to ignore the fact that his face was familiar. Simultaneously, she hated herself for giving so much importance to the man who abducted her.
Why am I concerned about anything related to this man? He is the one responsible for separating me from my family. Have I seen him before? Why do I care? We encounter numerous people daily. I might have seen this man also. What is the big deal? But why this restlessness?
Drowned in a sea of thoughts and questions, Samiksha fell asleep without her notice.
Roshan assured Samiksha’s parents that they would bring her back no matter what. He finally thought of informing the local police. Along with Samiksha’s father, he filed a complaint about his missing fiance.
Sandra served Samiksha breakfast.
“You would be pleased to hear this. You can stroll along that part of the mansion.” Pointing towards the open area outside of the window, Sandra informed her.
“Aren’t you happy to hear this?”
“How can you even ask me this? I am not on vacation here, Sandra. My family is searching for me and …”
“Look, child. Life isn’t fair. It puts us in harsh situations without a warning. You have two choices till the situation is over, which for sure it will. Either keep crying. Cribbing, complaining. Or accept what you cannot change and learn to deal with it as gracefully as possible. Difficult, but not impossible. The choice is yours.”
As Sandra was about to leave the room, Samiksha questioned her.
“Will you accompany me?”
Smiling, Sandra replied, “Why not? But you can go there whenever you wish, without anyone’s consent.”
As they walked along,
Samiksha observed the lush greenery and wild, colourful flowers that bloomed all around. She started guessing the names of the flowers as she had never seen them before. Her mind calmed down for the first time since she arrived there. Sandra showed her the gazebo, which highlighted the mansion’s surroundings. Its ancient structure held Samiksha’s gaze for quite a long.
They entered the gazebo and sat on a bench inside it.
“I should thank you for being so kind to me. Whatever you speak feels like pearls of wisdom to me. I just cannot ignore what you say. Do you have kids?”
“Yes. One.”
“Hmm. I would like to meet your child. Sure he or she has the grace and wisdom you carry too.”
“Yes, he does have.”
“Thank you for getting me here.”
“It’s not me
who decided to get you here. It’s him, the master. He instructed me to get you out of the four walls so that you can get some fresh air.”
Before she could continue, Samiksha got up.
“Again, you are acting impulsively, child. Ask your heart; don’t you know deep inside that you are in the open air right now because of him? I serve him, that’s all.”
“Don’t forget, I am caged also because of him.”
Samiksha, somehow pacified, sat again.
“He never wished this life. Circumstances turned him from a tender, sensitive boy, fond of soft, heart-touching music, into what he is. Cold, stubborn, yet wise.”
Unknowingly, Samiksha wanted to know more about this man who was addressed as master by all, including this gentle, kind lady.
“You always are supportive towards him. Maybe you have known him for a long time. Or you are a loyal one who serves their masters, however dark they are.”
“No. It’s not what you think. Sometimes, situations compel us to become something we had never desired or wished for. He is not an exception to the blows of fate.”
“So he is doing this without his will?”
“Only he can answer this, not me. But all I can say is that he is a gem.”
“Oh really? A gem, who kidnaps people, abuses. “
“He doesn’t abuse. Did he use a single word or gesture that could hurt a woman’s sentiments while you were with him?” After a pause, Samiksha replied,
“No.”
“And I guarantee he will never do that. No matter how much one instigates him to.”
“How can you be so sure?”
A pause muted the conversation. The gazebo and its surroundings appeared more quiet than usual due to the strange silence between the women. Samiksha gestured for her to reply.
“Because I have raised him. He is my son.”
