Letters To God : Fifth Part

Instead of resting, Samiksha spent the holidays in thinking about why people worship Dr. Karan. She returned back to her job. “Welcome back Samiksha.” Karan spoke with a strange joy in his voice. She turned back and smiled. The doubt that haunted her at home still flooded her mind.

In the afternoon Karan invited her to have lunch with him. She accepted the invitation. While relishing the food made by his cook, he asked her slowly. “Is there anyone special in your life?” Samiksha gasped for air with a morsel in her mouth and started coughing. He offered her water immediately.

“I am sorry for startling you.”

Samiksha wiped her mouth and replied casually, “That’s fine. The question was a bit out of the league. So I got shocked. Um, no there is no one special in my life right now. Why did you ask this Dr. Karan?”

Karan literally blushed. “It was just a formal enquiry. Well, I am surprised at your answer. How come no gentleman noticed this simple, straight forward, dedicated nurse till now! Forgive me, I forgot one adjective.”

Samiksha looked at him eagerly.

“Beautiful.”

Samiksha smiled and lowered her eyes. “Dr. Karan.” A nurse called him and disrupted their conversation.
“Yes, Anandi?”
“There is an emergency. Please hurry up.”

Karan got up at once. He washed his hands and before leaving the room instructed Samiskha, “Finish your food ok.” He left the room.

After some time, Samiksha dialed a number.

“How are you, Anna?”

She heard the reply and spoke to him for some time. “I need to go. Take care.”
In the evening Samiksha asked Karan, “How is that patient now?”
“Better. He was suffering from a traumatic brain injury. No worries, he is out of danger now.”

“What had happened?”

“An accident.”

Samiksha kept looking at him. He spoke about the patient but Samiksha was lost in her thoughts. After he realised this, he tapped on her shoulder.

“Samiksha. What happened? Are you fine?”

“Yes. I need to go.”

Owing to the long distance between her aunt’s home and hospital, Samiksha had applied for a room in the hostel. This hostel was run by the trustees of the hospital itself. Her application was accepted and she started staying in the hostel with Vibha, the nurse who had befriended Samiksha lately.

They shared a nice bond and opened their hearts to each other. At night, they shared their experiences of the day and emptied hearts with each other. The same night, Vibha asked Samiksha.

“So, how are things with Dr. Karan?”

“Fine. Why?”

“It’s my observation. I don’t know about others. But he cares for you.”

Samiksha shrugged her shoulders. “What a joke. Nothing like that. We share a casual relationship. That’s it.”

“Hmm. I don’t agree. The concern he has for you is not what one has for a colleague. It’s much deep and intense. Trust me, Samiksha. He has some feelings for you.”
Samiksha laughed. “Nopes. It’s not what you feel.” She got up and went on her bed. “Good night. Sleep now. And don’t overthink.”

But turning her face away from Vibha, Samiksha had a smile. Not joyful, but strange.
