Letters To God: Second Part

Samiksha’s first day at the hospital went as smooth as butter. Back at home, she shared her experience with her aunt and also called her parents for the same. She was excited for the next day.

‘Dr. Karan will be addressing the newly joined staff, inclusive of the interns in a brief meeting. The latter are requested to gather in the conference room‘. The announcement from the speaker caught Samiksha’s attention as she was busy attending a patient. She finished her work and joined the other staff in the conference room. Dr. Karan, along with three other senior doctors entered the room with his charming aura and ease. He started addressing the group.

“My dear friends,

Welcome to Prayerful Hands. Just three things, dedication at any cost.” He gestured the point as number one with his finger. “Smile on the face to ease the patients who are already in pain.” Now, he gestured a smile with his thumb and index finger. “And most important of all, be calm in any situation, no matter where you are. In case of doubts, please stop and consult your seniors. Keep your ego aside. It is not more important than someone’s life. My best wishes are with all of you. Let us disperse.”

Samiksha raised her hand.

“Yes, nurse.” Karan addressed her.

“Sir, I had expected a formal introduction of us interns.”

Karan smiled and answered her, “I understand your curiosity as a fresher. But our patients are waiting for us, right? And we will get countless situations to know each other. So, let us move.” Karan left the room discussing a matter with his colleague.

Samiksha looked at another newly joined nurse Vibha. “Very rude and seriously, ridiculously practical, I must say.”

Vibha quietened her and continued, “Do not say this to anyone else here. People worship Dr. Karan. Remember what I said. And I think he was just being professional. Let us leave now so we can resume back.” Shrugging her shoulders, Samiksha left the conference room quietly with her newly made friend.

Later during the day, as Samiksha was passing by a room, she saw Dr. Karan conversing with a patient, while

She was surprised to see the ease with which the patient talked to Dr. Karan. She felt like he was opening his heart to the doctor, as if he knew him since ages. Seeing this side of Dr. Karan, undoubtedly surprised Samiksha. She had already witnessed his comfort level with the small patient the other day.

The announcement of which nurse will assist a particular doctor was made by senior nurse Maria.

Samiksha was paired with Dr. Karan. She shared with Vibha, “I hope he doesn’t scold me. Wish me good luck.”

“Not at all. Just go. You will not get a mentor better than him. Go, all the best.” Vibha left from there. Samiksha prayed to God and went to his cabin. “May I come in, Dr. Karan?” Samiksha asked him.

“Yes, Ms. Samiksha. Come. Sit. Take this water.” He offered her a glass of water, getting up from his chair. “Thank you so much, sir. You know my name?” Karan smiled. “Yes. I know the name of each intern. Seeing your nervousness, I thought a glass of water might calm down your anxiety. You are from Chennai, right?”

“Yes, absolutely. So glad to see you so much about the newly appointed ones.”

“Well, it is a part of my job. I prefer addressing people by their names. It makes them relaxed and feel acquainted. Come on, let us go. I do not stop once I start talking.”

“Is it? You are so different from what I expected. I guess, I am relaxed now.” Samiskha’s smile on the face said it all and they both left for the duty. Somehow Karan was surprised at the comfort level he shared while talking to Samiksha. Basically, he was an introvert.

An ambulance arrived with a nonstop siren. It was an emergency. The attendants rushed towards it. An injured police inspector was carefully taken down and moved towards the lift. The trauma section was upwards on the seventh floor, so he had to be taken by lift there. Dr. Karan and Samiksha at once entered the lift. He instructed the staff before entering, “Be ready. We both are bringing him up.” They both took him in the lift. He was injured badly in an accident and was crying with pain. “Will I survive this?” He asked Karan.

Karan replied, placing his hand on his.

“Don’t worry this injection will relieve your pain. Just keep breathing and don’t close your eyes.” Samiksha added, “Yes, do not go to sleep please.” Suddenly, the lift halted with a jerk. There was power cut. It was dark in the lift.

“Do not worry, inspector. We have generators to bring the power back. Do not give up.”

“I don’t think I can survive this pain … doctor.” Suddenly Karan started searching something in the inspector’s pant pocket. He removed his wallet and hunted through it. He found a family photo inside one of its compartment.

“Who are they?” Karan asked him with urge.

“My wife … … my kids.”

The inspector answered struggling for life. “You have to stay strong for them. They need you, dear.” Karan held his hand. The inspector nodded and struggled to breathe again. Samiksha was at loss of words for Karan’s presence of mind and the way he used to keep him awake and vigilant. She kept a close check on the glucose bottle. The only light in the lift was of the torch from Samiksha’s mobile phone. She started sweating profusely.

“Are you fine Samiksha?” Karan asked her laying his hand on her shoulder. “Yes, I am. Don’t worry. I sweat usually when I am under pressure.” Samiksha wiped her sweat and continued to hold the mobile phone.

The lights came, and finally the lift started towards its destiny.

As they reached the trauma special floor, they got off quickly.

The police inspector’s elder brother and two colleagues had arrived. After the tests and other formalities, the inspector was taken to the operation theatre immediately.

Samiksha noticed Dr. Karan seemed to be nowhere. Her eyes searched him desperately. Someone tapped on her shoulder. It was Maria. “Who are you looking for dear?” Samiksha asked her, “Where is Dr. Karan? Till now he was with me. Suddenly he disappeared. I was helping the inspector’s brother to fill form.”

Maria smiled and answered, “Before any surgery, you will find Dr. Karan only in one place. Besides the changing room, there is a room for praying. It is open for all. In fact, this room is an initiative by him. He is there, praying for the patient.” Samiksha went away from there instantly. She slowly peeped into the prayer room.

Seeing Karan’s vulnerable side was something new to her.

The OT light was on. Two doctors and two nurses  assisted Dr. Karan for the surgery. Samiksha stepped back, her eyes were on the indicator light outside the OT.
