Maharashtrian Style Dal (Varan/वरण )

Friends, here is one more tasty recipe for you all. Moong dal with coconut masala. You can also make it using tur dal or urad dal. Maharastrians make this yummy dal quite often. It is called as ‘Vatanachi dal’ or Varan ( वाटणाची डाळ / वरण ). It is a staple dish of Maharashtra and is served with hot rice and homemade ghee. Mix rice and dal first. Top it with homemade ghee. The taste is heavenly and yummy.

Ingredients :

½ Cup Moong Dal

¼ Part Of A Wet Coconut

½ Tsp Turmeric Powder

½ Tsp Cumin Seeds

4 to 5 Coriander Seeds

Small Clove Of Garlic

Water As Needed

Salt As Needed

Method :

Boil the moong dal in a cooker and keep it aside. Take coconut pieces or grated coconut in a mixer jar. Add turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and the garlic clove. First, grind the above ingredients without water. Add water gradually. This helps to combine all the ingredients very well. NOTE: This tip is given to me by my elder sister Sushma, who is an exceptional cook.

Grind into a smooth paste. Add this paste to the boiled moong dal. Mix well. Add salt.

Put the vessel on a gas burner and reduce the flame. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes till it comes to a boil. Switch off the burner after the first boil.

Remove the dal from the flame. Serve it hot with rice and homemade ghee. Enjoy this hot dal (Varan), a staple dish of Maharashtra.
