The Moonchild – 24th Part

Hemant Sen lay on the bed waiting for his destiny to unfold. He knew his medical condition and was prepared to face it as usual. Somehow, he missed his daughter today. Even after avoiding the thoughts which entered his restless mind every now and then, Poorna appeared in front of him, smiling. He wiped the tear that fell from his eye and turned toward his left, facing the door. Just then, it opened, and two gentlemen entered his room. One was in his fifties, and the other was just a kid. He wore his specs and saw. “Mohandas, you are here? And, who is he?”

Joy moved his hand on his soft hair. “Dada, didn’t you recognise me? We met at the hotel.”

Hemant Sen instantly remembered their brief encounter.

But also realised who he was. His fatherly instinct compelled him to just take the kid into his arms. But the chains of tradition and stubborness stopped him.

“How are you? Mohandas questioned him, breaking into his thoughts.
“I am fine. When did you come?”
“In the morning. As soon as we came to know, we just left Kolkata.”
“That is kind of you. But you shouldn’t have hurried like this.”
“Samiksha was worried for you. I could sense her concern. So we couldn’t stop ourselves. She is resilient, and hardly gets affected by alarming situations. But, she sounded devastated yesterday.”

Hemant Sen did not say much. He had still not forgiven Samiksha. The nurse entered the room and questioned at once, “How come you two are here?”

“They are my family.”

Hemant Sen told the nurse at once. Mohandas went near the nurse and asked her in soft voice about his health. Joy came near Hemant and said, “Don’t worry Dada. My mother will never let anything happen to you. Dad is also here. We all are there for you. Don’t worry ok.”

Hemant Sen was surprised to see the level of understanding this boy had. No doubt, his upbringing made him so kind and caring.

Back at the hospital passage, Karan, Anurag and Poorna had finished their testing. Because of the advanced technology the laboratory used, the results arrived. In spite of Aurag and Karan’s request, Poorna was reluctant to do the test along

Hemant Sen moved his hand over Joy’s head and smiled. A phone call made Mohandas leave the room along with Joy.

Somehow, Karan and Anurag’s HLA did not match with Hemant Sen’s as required.

But Poorna’s matched. Even though she was overwhelmed with the results, Anurag looked at Karan with concern. “What is the matter?” Karan asked.

“Poorna’s platelet count is a bit less. But her HLA matches perfectly with his.”
“Go ahead.” Rex intervened. “There are medications to improve her platelet count, right? I had consulted my friend. He is also a doctor and is aware of Poorna’s condition. You can go ahead.”

“I know Rex, but it will indicate complete bed rest for Poorna. How will you manage? Joy is so small.”
“Mom will be at our home for some days. I have informed her. She will take care of Poorna.”

Karan was lost in his thoughts. “What happened?” Anurag placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“I wish Baba saw all this. What a golden-hearted son-in-law he has.”
Anurag smiled and replied, “He will see it soon.”

Samiksha saw all this and left from there.

She opened the door of Hemant Sen’s cabin slowly. As she was about to to close it back, Hemant called her. “Come.”

She came in with wet eyes. “Dada, you will be fine.”
“I know. You all are there for me.”
“Yes, we all are here for you.” She placed her hand on his. ” All of us.”

Hemant Sen sensed the word ‘all’ and his heartbeat skipped. Joy would have come here obviously with his parents, he knew. But he lacked the courage to say anything right now. Anurag entered the room.

“Baba, we are ready for the transfusion. We have got the donor.”
“Who? I need to see the donor and thank him. It must be Karan, right? Only a family member can be a proper donor for this. Call Karan.”

Anurag looked at Samiksha. She let a sigh.
“Not Karan Baba, your donor is our Poorna.”
