Samiksha sat in her room pondering upon what move she should make first. She whispered to herself, looking at the moon’s photo in a magazine. “Bandhu, now you show me the right path. I am so lost.” Just when she was talking to herself, Charu entered her room. Samiksha felt as if her Bandhu showed her the way, as always. “Charu.” Samiksha jumped from the bed and caught Charu by hand. She made her sit on the sofa.
“What is it, Baudi?”
“I want your help.” Charu got up immediately. I hope it’s not related to what happened in the library the other day.”
“Hmm. How many years have you worked here, Charu?”
“More than 15 years.”
“Indeed a long span of service. You have seen the ups and downs of this house closely, Charu. You know Poorna personally.”
“Shh. Don’t take her name, Baudi.”
“But why? Tell me, honestly, Charu. Don’t you feel that this house should smile again? A sister should unite with her brothers. And a daughter with her parents.”
Charu nodded with tears in her eyes.
“Then you have to help me to do this.” Samiksha put her hand in front of Charu.
With mixed thoughts, Charu placed her hand on Samiksha’s. “I will, Baudi.”
“No one knows where Poorna stays,” Samiksha said sadly.
“Who said so?”
“Means? You know someone who has an idea about her whereabouts?”
“I know where she stays, Baudi.”
“What?”
“Please don’t shout.”
“Sorry. Tell me.” Charu informed her,
“One day, I had been to the market area at my sister’s place. She stays at Krishnapur. I saw Poorna there. It was after her marriage to that boy. No one from this home was allowed to meet her after Baba’s orders. But I couldn’t stop myself. She took me to her home. And Baudi, since then I have been visiting her without anyone’s knowledge.”
“That is such good news, Charu. Please take me to her as soon as possible.”
“I will. But we have to be careful.”
“Yes. Let me know when we can go to meet her. We will also take Bhabi ja.
“Are you sure? Will she support us?”
“Yes. She will. Don’t worry. All right, let us do this. First, we both will go. Let us not hurry.”
“Exactly. Both of you cannot be out of the home. Others will suspect. Today is Monday. Durga pooja is going on. Everyone will be busy these days. Baba and Ma go to so many places for the celebration. People invite them with due regard. We will go on Wednesday.”
Samiksha agreed. She hugged Charu before letting her go. Charu helped her make the first move in Samiksha’s work. Of course, her Bandhu had shown her the right person.
Wednesday arrived earlier than usual. Samiksha had decided she would inform Karan and Sumitra after meeting Poorna. Charu and Samiksha left home to buy decorative and other household materials. When they reached Krishnapur, Samiksha’s joy knew no bounds. They entered the area where Poorna stayed. There were individual row houses. A small staircase took them to her home. Samiksha shivered in anxiety as she climbed each step.
Charu pointed at the home.
“She stays here.” Smiling at Charu, Samiksha rang the doorbell. After two minutes, the door opened. Samiksha was stunned to see Poorna in person. A loving, smiling Poorna looked at her with anticipation.
Charu appeared from behind Samiksha.
“Charu,” Poorna spoke at once. She hugged her and looked at Samiksha anxiously.
“Meet your Baudi, Charu. She is Karan’s wife.”
Poorna kept looking at her in shock. Samiksha spread her arms and called out Poorna’s name. Without a second thought, Poorna ran into the open arms of her Baudi. Charu could not believe her eyes. She joined her hands and looked up at the sky. “Dhanyabad, Prabhu (God), for bringing this angel into our lives.”
“Come inside, Baudi.”
Poorna led her sister-in-law and Charu in.
“Charu, how did she come here? Does Baba know about this? How is Ma? Karan knows that you are here.”
“Relax, relax, my dear,” Samiksha interrupted a panicked Poorna. “No one knows that I have come here right now. But don’t worry. Everything will be good. Durga Ma is with us. I have come to take you home.”
Charu and Poorna looked at each other. Charu nodded her head.
“She is a magician, Poorna. She will do what she has promised. See, she hardly knew about you some time ago, and now she is here, at your home.”
“Just give me some time, Bona (sister). Your family will welcome you soon. Where is your husband?”
“He has gone to his job. And Joy is at school.”
“Joy?” Samiksha asked curiously.
“My son.”
Samiksha’s heart ached at the fact that her sister-in-law had welcomed the greatest happiness of her life without her family by her side.
