Poorna was overwhelmed by Samiksha’s kind and empathetic nature. But Samiksha had time restraints, so she had to leave.
“Don’t worry, Poorna. Life sometimes tests us so hard, and we tend to give up. I am glad you have maintained your contagious sweet smile after all you have faced. I promise you, everything will be fine. Soon.”
“I am happy that Karan Da found you. No doubt he chose you as his life partner.”
They hugged each other. Charu had tears in her eyes.
“Baudi, let us leave. We are already late.”
Poorna bid them farewell but with hope in her heart to reunite with her family.
When Karan returned home around 9 p.m., he was lying on his bed after having dinner. Samiksha entered the room, wiping her hands with a towel. She sat in front of the dressing table for her pre-bedtime routine.
“What is so different about me today, Mr. Lawyer? I have been observing since dinner. You are unable to take your eyes off me. Have you fallen in love with me?”
“Hmm. I think so for the second time. First, it was when I saw you on the terrace. Chatting with the lonely moon on that starry night. You looked mesmerising and captured my heart forever.” He pointed at his chest on the left side. “Ever since then, I lost interest in all the other women.”
Samiksha smiled graciously and lay beside him.
She rested her head on his chest. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“Which?”
“Why are you so observant today?”
“I feel you are happy today. I don’t know why, but there is a glow on your face. What is it? Is a junior lawyer on the way?” Samiksha laughed at him.
“Not so soon. I want our child to receive the love of everyone in his family. Everyone. Including his Fuppi.”
Karan looked at her face and said.
“Samiksha, I told you Baba is very adamant. He will never allow Poorna to be a part of this family again. And she is happy with her husband. What more can we ask for? Perhaps … “
“I met Poorna today.”
Karan got up and sat at once.
“What? How did you find her? Does anyone know about this? Samiksha, you will end up in trouble.”
“Relax. Calm down. Take this.” She offered him a glass of water. “First, promise me you will listen with a calm mind.” She stretched her hand. He reciprocated, nodding his head.
She narrated the whole incident to Karan. He heard Samiksha’s each and every word with patience.
“Charu was always close to Poorna. She took care of her like her own daughter. No wonder she knew her whereabouts. Even though she could have landed herself in trouble, Charu chose loyalty towards Poorna. I am glad at least someone stood by her.”
“Then what stopped you, Karan?”
“Samiksha, Ma would be alone in this battle. She is torn between her duty towards her husband and the support she should have given her daughter. Imagine her plight. I am here for her Samiksha.”
“I understand, Karan.” She embraced her husband.
“I want to meet her too.
After she got married, Anurag and I tried to trace her. But we couldn’t. After a few days, I got a client, Mrs. Clare Collins. During the discussion, she mentioned her brother, William Collins. She said she needed my help to get the rights of her sister-in-law back. After further probing, I learned she was talking about none other than Poorna.” Samiksha was all ears to him. “She was keen on reuniting Poorna with her family. She felt deeply that Poorna suffered unnecessarily. It was merely due to someone’s lack of ability to be sensible enough to have regard for all religions. She meant Baba. Mrs. Clare wanted him to involuntarily accept that his daughter fell in love with someone not belonging to their religion. As a lawyer, she wanted me to convince Baba to talk to Poorna again. But he straightaway refused and gave me a clear sign to leave. I had to stay back for Ma. I apologised to Mrs. Clare and thanked God for giving Poorna such a loving and supportive family.”
Samiksha let out a sigh. “Let us hope that everything will be fine. Poorna has undergone so much in the past few years.” She rested her head on his chest. The moon silently saw his moonchild from the sky, vulnerable, maybe for the time being. But he knew his moonchild would find a way out of this situation. After all, kindness and sensitivity are the virtues of the brave ones, not the weak. He blessed them both before hiding behind his companions, the clouds and the twinkling stars.
The festive season of Diwali was on. It was Bhai Phota.
Samiksha and Karan got ready, along with other family members. Karan’s Mama (Maternal Uncle) visited as usual. After the celebration, everyone relaxed in their respective rooms. Samiksha had already informed Anurag about an outing. Putting forth a reason for seeing her relative, Samiksha took Karan, Anurag and Sumitra along. In the car, Anurag asked her about this relative. She managed to give him satisfactory answers. No one was aware of where they were headed.
The car stopped, and everyone got down. Samiksha guided them to the house where her relative stayed. She rang the bell and stood aside. Karan gestured to her about her action. She murmured, “I want to give her a surprise. So you both stand here. Anurag, come. She will wonder who you two are.” Samiksha winked, and she rang the bell again.
