The Moonchild – 14th Part

When Samiksha opened her eyes, she found her mother-in-law, Sumitra, and Karan beside her. She tried to get up from the bed, but Mithila stopped her at once.
“Lay down, Samiksha. You don’t look fine. Karan said You fainted. What happened?” Sumitra was also worried about her. She caught her hand and patted it.
A nervous Samiksha looked at Karan. He replied to his mom,
“I guess she must be hungry. Or she has thought something very deeply, as always. Right, Samiksha?”
Samiksha did not feel like saying anything.

Mithila caressed her head as she spoke, “Come for dinner. Then, sleep early. We will speak tomorrow. Sumitra will be with her for the whole day tomorrow, alright?”
Sumitra nodded. “Yes, Ma. I will be with her. I think we have not given her the love she expected from all of us.”

Samiksha spoke immediately.

“No, Bhabi. You all have made me feel at home since I came here. It’s just that I think a lot.”
“Karan, did you trouble Samiksha?” Sumitra asked playfully.
“Baudi … You can ask her.” A shy Samiksha lowered her head. Her smile was an answer to Sumitra’s question.
They all proceeded to the dinner and finished it in a lighter mood. When Karan came to bed at night, he knew what was in store for him. Samiksha was on the terrace looking at the moon.

“I am missing you Bandhu. I wish to hug you. Forget everything that happened today and go on. But you know me. I cannot ignore what happened today. And above all …” Karan’s embracing hands from behind disrupted her conversation.

“Hmm. You can open your heart to me also. I know you love your Bandhu more.” Samiksha turned and embraced Karan.

“I love you both, equally.”
“And your Kaka Kaki?”
“Them also.”
“So you love Maa less, right?”
“No. It’s not like that. Wait. You are pulling my leg?” Karan burst into laughter. And so did Samiksha.

“Please keep smiling like this.

I cannot see you tensed and in pain.”
“Who is that girl, Karan? She is with you and Anurag Da in so many photos,” Samiksha asked directly.
Karan knew he had got to answer this now.
“Come inside.” They came into their room. Samiksha sat on the bed, not taking her eyes off him. Karan took the album in his hand and opened it.
“She is Poorna. My and Anurag’s sister.”

“What? I had no idea you had a sister, too. Where is she then? Why was she not there for our marriage?”
Karan moved his hand lovingly on Poorna’s face. “My father has disowned her. He has broken all ties with Poorna.”
“But why?” Samiksha got up from the bed with a shocked look on her face.

“You sit down first.

After fainting in the evening, you cannot stress yourself so much.”
“But Karan, this is something about our family. How can I keep calm? Please tell me. Where is she? Why doesn’t Dada talk to her?”
“She married a Christian. Dad could not bear this, and he took that decision.”
“I don’t believe this. She is his daughter. All are human beings. Why this discrimination? Why does she have to bear this pain of separation? What must Maa be going through?”
“See. This is the reason I was avoiding this discussion.”
“Avoiding? Karan, she is your sister. Don’t you love her?”

“I do. But Dada has prevented all of us from meeting her. So we don’t.”
“No Karan. I don’t accept this.”
“Samiksha, everything is not in our hands. And you don’t know what will happen if this matter reoccurs. So I request you to please forget this. She is fine. Don’t worry.”
“No. I cannot just hear that she is fine and keep quiet. I need to see her. Talk to her. Even she must be missing all of you. I want to meet her.”

“Samiksha, stop it.” Karan raised his tone a bit.

“No Karan, I want to see her.”
“Samiksha!” Karan shouted. This was the first time he had raised his voice while talking to her. Samiksha decided not to speak, at least for now. Keeping the album back in the cupboard, Karan slept facing away from Samiksha. She, too, turned her head and closed her eyes.

Let this night pass. Maybe she will calm down by tomorrow” he thought.
“Tomorrow, I will make him take me to her. She needs us,” Samiksha muttered slowly.
