The Longest Wait – 7th Part

Diwali was on the way. But I had pledged not to eat any fried foods. Most of the snacks at this festival are fried. So there was no question of me eating any. Mom and my sister were not in the mood as I am the chirpiest in my family. I knew my silence was unbearable to them, but things were not in my hands. I am happy only when I truly am. At night, my other two cats used to sleep in our room, my mom’s room, and the other cats with my sister. As cats are more restless during the night, either or both of them woke me every night in the middle. First of all, I used to sleep after a lot of difficulty. And if my sleep was disrupted, I stayed awake for long hours.

Staring at the dark sky, I saw the lights of the distant buildings without any emotions. In fact, I had turned very cold and rude. My anger at God for not returning Divine to me made me quieter. October had started. My eldest sister often told me to write my prayers to God; He listens. I have also done that in the past month. But the delay made me doubt everything now.

Both my sisters, my mom and my niece

have ardent faith in God. They used to tell me to trust Him; He is the sole Doer. He will sort out everything. I prayed at times, but my patience seemed to wither away, slowly. I had no patience left in me anymore. I had only one question. Why is he doing this to me? After my dog passed away, I completely stopped celebrating Diwali. Now, there was no enthusiasm left at all. I felt all the troubles were directed towards me right now. The fear that I might never meet Divine again enveloped my mind. Also, what if he doesn’t recognise us after we find him? Many of our friends and acquaintances told us cats, unlike dogs, are not loyal to their owners. They don’t stay in one place. If they find food somewhere else, they leave the previous locality.

These fears ate me up day and night. My health had deteriorated a lot. I ate only for the sake of filling my stomach. There was no hunger or joy left.

It was the 2nd week of October. The festival of Diwali was due.

After moving to this house, we had not taken up the work of arranging things properly in a serious mode. In fact, there was no time for this. Finding Divine was the task of priority in our lives. At the weekend, my sister suggested we arrange a few things in one of the rooms. Each of the rooms has sliding doors for windows. We never kept them open as there were cats in the house. We had put up a net frame for air circulation for three rooms. Being on the 6th floor, we were very particular about closing the door properly so that no cat would move out. Cats are curious animals. But whenever they sat near the windows, they only observed nature. We were extra careful since we had experienced how Divine had gone through the window.

It was morning. My sister and I were busy with the arrangement of things. That day, she decided to go in the evening to search for Divine. As I said before, there was not a single day when she did not go to find him. I was in the living room. Suddenly, she called me into the parallel room. One of our male cats had moved out through the sliding door of the window. He went out and sat on the outdoor AC unit. When I saw this scenario, I lost my breath at once. At first, I got wild about why the door was kept open. How did this happen?

But bringing the cat back inside was more important than my queries.

My sister tried to call him by hand gestures, but in vain. Mom was also worried seeing this vision. We did not know what to do. The cat used to get up and again sit cosily. However, the top surface area of the AC unit was barely two feet. I got chills down my spine. What if he falls? Eagles and crows usually used to fly at that height. If they see the cat, they might try to harm him. My sister and mom tried to pacify me, but I could not be pacified. One cat was already missing. What if this one loses balance and falls down?

The thought was enough to shake me from head to toe.
