Samiksha was surprised by Charu’s expression. She asked her, “What happened, Charu? Are you alright?”
“Yes, Baudi. Keep this back.” Charu took the album from Samiksha’s hand. “Let us go from here. I have taken the albums you wanted.”
“Charu. What is wrong? Why can’t we carry this album with us? I want to see even this.”
“Please don’t insist on this. Let us go.”
Samiksha tried to take the album from her and said, “Then let me keep it back. Your hands are full already.”
“No, wait.” Charu lost her balance, and the albums fell to the floor.
“I am so sorry Charu. Let me help you.” Samiksha helped Charu pick the albums, but she did not ignore Charu’s turmoil.
“I am sorry, Baudi.
You are a Putrabadhu of this family, and I am stopping you.”
“Charu, it’s OK.” Charu started crying, wiping her tears with the pallu of her saree. Samiksha noticed the open album on the floor. It was the same album Charu had stopped her from seeing. She was shocked and surprised to see its contents. Charu was busy wiping her tears and picking up the remaining albums. Samiksha took the album in her hands and opened it.
She had seen Anurag and Karan’s childhood photographs, and she was familiar with their faces as children. But who is this third girl? She is along with the two brothers in all these photos. Who is she? Thoughts flooded Samiksha’s mind as she turned the pages of the album front and back. Charu got up and saw this.
“Who is she, Charu?
Samiksha questioned curiously to Charu. But Charu seemed speechless and scared at the same time.
“What is it, Charu? Why do you look so tense?”
“Baudi, please ask Karan Da about this. Let me go.” Wiping her tears and sweat, Charu rushed out of the room. As the overthinker that Samiksha was, thoughts started flooding her fragile mind. Why did Charu react like that? She kept wondering. She carried the album to her room. It was evening. Karan was about to come home. Lost in thought, she kept the album in the cupboard and lay on her bed.
Why am I not aware of this girl in Karan’s family? Who is she?
The sound of the opening of the door knob distracted her and she looked towards the door. It was Karan.
“Hello, wife. What is going on? How was your day?” He looked carefully at her face.
“Ki halo?”(What happened?)
First, she looked blankly at his face. Getting up from the bed, she strolled towards the cupboard. She removed the album from it and sat near him. The album was in a bag.
“Karan, shall I ask you something?”
“Yes, dear. Why are you quiet? Did anything happen after I left?”
Remembering Charu’s reaction to seeing the album, she was unsure but inquisitive about the mystery, so she removed the album from the bag. Karan recognised it at once. He took it from her hand.
“Who gave you this? How did you find it?”
Samiksha was scared at first, but she knew Karan very well. He was very calm and composed in tense situations.
“I went to the library to search for the albums. That day you showed me, remember? I wanted to see them again. And I found this there.”
“How did you know the albums are in the library?” Karan questioned.
Samiksha wanted to keep Charu out of this.
“You went with someone?”
“Yes.” She said hesitatingly. “But it was me who found the album. She did not show this to me.”
“Who?”
“Charu.”
She said after a pause. She kept looking at Karan to see how he reacted. Samiksha didn’t want Charu to fall in trouble, if any. Karan wiped his face with his palm and kept the album down.
“Please don’t say anything to Charu.” Samiksha was almost on the verge of crying. Unknowingly, she had unveiled a family secret.
“What happened? Are you fine?” Karan asked her.
She got up immediately from the bed. “Promise me you won’t say anything to Charu.” Before Karan could say anything, Samiksha lost her balance and fainted. Karan caught her at once.
