Everyone in Mohandas Chatterjee’s house was excited about their daughter’s upcoming wedding. Preparations began well in advance for the engagement and wedding ceremonies. As it was the monsoon, rain showered blessings on the event. Even the heaviest of rains could not dampen the excitement of the marriage preparations for Mohandas and Lakshmi.
The very first evening after Karan left for Kolkata, he called her. Samiksha was busy helping her aunt in the kitchen when the phone rang. She looked hesitantly at Lakshmi, who immediately noticed the blush on the former’s face.
“Who is it? Karan?”
“Yes, Chachi.”
“What are you doing here, then? Silly girl. Take the phone and run to your terrace. I will make sure no one disturbs you. It was raining sometime ago. Take an umbrella with you. Or better yet, stand under the shade, okay?”
Samiksha hugged her tight. “Don’t worry, my dearest Chachi.” She rushed towards the terrace with her phone. The rain had stopped. She looked at her phone screen and took the call, without greeting her Bandhu, for the first time.
“Hello.”
“Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab, aisa Maine socha tha. Haan tum bilkul waisi ho, jaisa Maine socha tha.” (I had never expected my beloved to be like the moon. But you are the same as I had imagined in my thoughts.) Karan whispered the lines of the famous Hindi Movie song, making Samiksha blush like an apple.
She smiled at the other end, holding her phone near her ears.
“Hmm. So you can sing too, Mr. Lawyer.”
“I had to. Knowing that my sweetheart wants her beloved to sing songs for her, with the mention of the moon, I am trying to impress her.”
Samiksha almost jumped, catching her phone, which was about to slip from her hand.
“How do you know about this wish of mine?”
“Now that is a good question. I can read minds, you know.”
After a pause, Samiksha spoke, “Don’t try to fool me. That day you overheard me talking to Bandhu, right?”
Karan giggled and continued, “You are a perfect match for this lawyer. Your memory is great.”
Samiksha laughed and said,
“Beware. I will use my skill to catch you red-handed.”
“In which matter?”
“Any. That time will tell.”
“So strange. I feel we have known each other for ages.”
“Same here. Time flies when I talk with you. I think you have cast a spell on me.”
“Sorry to correct. You are the one who did it.” Karan defended himself.
“You.”
“I give up.”
“So soon, Samiksha, madam?”
She spoke softly, “It’s good to give up in some matters.”
“Hmm. Noted. Had food? How is everyone?”
“All are fine. There?”
“Here too. You have one brother, right?”
“Yes.”
“How is his wife? I mean your Bhabi?”
“You come and see.
Tell me when are you coming here?”
“How can I say that? You have to ask Chacha.”
“Hmm. Let me see how to make this work.”
“Ok, bye. Let me go now. I have to help Chachi in the kitchen.”
“2 min.”
“Tell.”
“What did you like in me?”
Samiksha let out a deep sigh.
“I am waiting.” An eager Karan spoke, blinking his eyes.
“You are handsome, honest, straightforward, understanding, responsible, and caring.”
“Unbelievable. I had expected one or two. You wrote a whole essay for me. Thanks.”
Samiksha smiled happily at the other end.
“Go now. I know how much you care for others. This is the quality which made my heart yours, forever.”
“You are so good at expressing.”
“I have become so. In court, I need to speak for others. So this has come naturally.”
“I will wait for our next conversation.”
“Me too.”
“Bye, Samiksha.”
“Good night, Mr. Lawyer. Oh no!”
“What happened? Are you alright?”
“First time I came on the terrace and did not look at my Bandhu. You are a magician.”
“That I am. By the way, your Bandhu is visible from my terrace too.”
“Really?”
“Right now, it is hidden behind the clouds, though.”
“Same here.”
“It’s waiting for you, eagerly. Just like me.”
As the days passed, Karan and Samiksha developed a stronger bond. Time flew by fast and August arrived.
