Letters To God: First Part

When Samiksha Iyer stepped in Bangalore for the first time, she fell in love with the city instantly. Basically, from Chennai, she had freshly graduated from Apollo College of nursing. Her mother and father were her caretakers before she left Chennai and shifted to Bangalore to become a successful nurse. Now, she was on her own. In spite of arguing to stay in Bangalore as a paying guest, her parents persuaded her to stay with their relative, her maternal aunt. Her basic nature was that of a fighter. So, she did not give in easily. But, for the sake of their peace of mind, she agreed.

Working in the Prayerful Hands Hospital was her dream and she achieved it by successfully by clearing the interview last week. Today was her first day at the job as a nurse. She was excited and nervous at the same time. She stepped in the hospital, looking forward for a successful career.

The receptionist gave a warm welcome to her with her smile.
“Smita, you always manage to sweep my nervousness away.” Samiksha cheered her and made her way to the chief nurse’s cabin. Maria was waiting for her already.

“Come, Samiksha. I was waiting for you.

So, are you ready for this?” Maria gave her a stern, yet warm look.
“Yes, um Maria, can I call you by first name or address you as sister?”
“Relax. You can call me Maria. Here is your letter of appointment. You have to go first for rounds to see the areas you will be handling, that is this and the above floor. And, then you can start your duties. Get in your uniform, till then I shall arrange someone to assist you for the rounds.”
“Right, Maria. I will just change and come.”

Samiksha changed and came quickly. She felt a sense of pride in it. Taking her file and pen she found nurse Simi waiting for her.

“Hello Samiksha. I am Simi. We shall go for rounds first. Shall we make a move?”
“Sure, Simi. So glad to meet you.”
“So, are you from Bangalore?” Simi was curious.
“No, I am from Chennai. It was my dream to work here. I had heard a lot about this hospital.”
“Yes, it is reputed for its hospitality, work atmosphere and hygiene.”

The duo visited the first floor.

Simi introduced her to the medicine section, OT and other areas. Samiksha observed each places carefully with dedication. Suddenly a cry fell on her ears. She noticed a small boy in the corridor crying. His mother approached him and tried to convince him for something. But the boy refused to move. Samiksha felt an urge to go and talk to the boy. Simi looked at her restlessness.

“He is reluctant because they are taking him for an X-ray.”
“Shall I go and talk to him?”
“No. Just wait and watch.”

A man approached the boy with a soft toy. He talked to the boy in a friendly manner. “Probably, he is his father.” Samiksha thought in mind. The boy started smiling and got in the man’s arms. The man picked him and went towards the X-ray department along with the boy’s mother.

“Thank God, his father came.

The child was crying so badly.”
Simi started giggling. “What? He is not the boy’s father?”
“Then, who is he?” Samiksha enquired with a surprise.
“He is our in-charge Dr. Karan Shetty. We all work under him.”

“OH. He is Dr. Karan Shetty? I have heard a lot about him.” A wide eyed Samiksha spoke to Simi.

“Yes. Why not? You will know why I said this about him. Can we continue with the rounds?”
“Sure.” Samiksha started walking with Simi but looked over her shoulder behind to find Dr. Karan. But he had left from there. As soon as they were about to enter the lift to go on the second floor, she turned back once again. Before the lift door closed, she looked straight in front of her eyes and saw Dr. Karan. Now, he was in his uniform.

After finishing the rounds and getting acquainted with the hospital, Samiksha started her journey as a nurse.
