Optic Neuritis And Me – Conclusion

We went for the MRI test to find out the intensity of the problem, optic neuritis. Both of my elder sisters accompanied me for the same. We completed the necessary formalities and waited for my turn for the test. I had neither done an MRI, nor even experienced an IV before. Detection of the symptoms of optic neuritis will lead to the IV process, which I dreaded. Trying to relax myself, I continued to smile. My sisters were there to cheer me up and mom’s prayers were obviously helping me to face this, as usual.

The cold atmosphere due to the AC caused my nervousness to peak. Finally, they called me. I got up, went to the changing room and got ready to face this. My sister accompanied me to the MRI room. There were two people, one lady and one man, who was performing the actual test. They gave me the instructions. Clarified that, in case I feel uncomfortable at any point, I should press the warning bell.

Somehow, I was relaxed now.

They made me lie down. My eyes were covered. Even I was covered fully with a thick blanket. I was slowly sent inside the MRI chamber. I asked the man, how long will it take. He said, about half an hour. I was like, now there is no escape. I cannot possible run away from here, so better relax. The process started. My sister, my angel was sitting in the room right there, giving me silent, yet strong support. My other sister was outside, praying for me.

The man gave me instructions from time to time. Now you will hear a loud sound, close your eyes, do not open them etc. A loud banging sound was heard in intervals. Otherwise, it was like some weird sound like someone breathing heavily. The MRI was of head, so every part of it was recorded by the machine, minutely.

I have vertigo, so I cannot lie down on straight bed for long.

Somehow, I managed to go through it. Slowly, the time passed. And it was done. I literally thanked the man for co-operating and giving instructions so as to inform me in that complete black out room. The man and the lady helped me to get up, and I was out of the room, finally. As soon as I came out, tears overflew and I sat down. The experience was not less than a trauma. I told them, life is really a boon. Everyone needs to take care of health, sincerely. And also, some more life lessons, many of which I don’t follow now. Both my sisters knew, I was vulnerable at that time, so I was in a preach mode. They knew very well, the complaining and short tempered me will be back, soon.

The reports came and by God’s grace, and prayers of loved ones, the condition was not that serious. Only an IV process was needed for the cure. The liquid extraction from the spine was ruled out, thankfully. I had never heard of this word optic neuritis before, nor any of my family members. It was a strange experience.

The next step was taking medicine through IV.

We had to perform a blood test first. It was done and the reports indicated we can go ahead with the IV test. We had two options, to get admitted for three days in a hospital, as the medicine had to be injected three times in series. Or go there daily and get the process done. Obviously, we opted for the second. My sister accompanied me daily. And this was accomplished too. The nurses there were very helpful. They made me relax as it was my first time. After the first intake of the medicine through IV itself, I found my vision improving. Then, I was on medication for nearly fifteen days.

On completion of the entire medication, I could see everything clear, like before. I was advised to do eye exercises regularly to avoid relapse of optic neuritis. Our family friend, who happens to be a nurse too, gave me this precious advice. I followed it and it helped me.

Now, I avoid exerting myself too much, as it can trigger the condition again. I will never forget this experience of optic neuritis ever in my entire lifetime. I pray to God, that no one should get this strange condition. Let us all take care of these precious gifts, our eyes.
