The Longest Wait – 4th Part

There was no excitement of entering a new home. The mind was full of grief and regret. It was dark when we arrived at our new rental home. My eldest sister and mom were waiting for us there. But I was not in a state to talk to anyone. Straightaway, I went to a room, lost in thought. The worry for Divine was haunting me with every passing second. The area where we lost him had quite a large number of dogs. My brain questioned again and again. Where will be Divine? Is he still hiding somewhere? Maybe he came out of the hiding place. Did he eat anything? Could he protect himself from the dogs?

I was used to feeding the kittens at fixed times. I was devastated, thinking, what must have happened to Divine? The other ten kittens were in a separate room. They were fed, but my hunger had died. Feeling responsible for Divine’s missing this way, I refused to eat a morsel. But somehow, my sister fed me.

My sister said she would go there back to stay overnight.

I hoped that Divine would return, so my sister and niece left for the previous rental home. But I was restless here. I slept along with the ten kittens. But my mind was awake searching Divine. I prayed to God to send him back. The following day, my sister and niece returned without him. I was terribly angry with the Almighty for not listening to me. His Idol was placed in the worshipping place. Enraged, I lifted the idol and said, “Do not make Him sit here. He is responsible for Divine’s present state. My sisters and mom tried to pacify me, but it was useless.

The boxes full of household things lay here and there, but I looked blankly at them. There was so much work to do. Unfortunately, my hands and legs refused to coordinate, losing me in another world. Both sisters looked after the formalities of the new home, getting a gas connection, arranging for an electricity supply, and so on.

That day passed.

My eldest sister went back to her home as she was married and had her own chores. The next day, there was nothing new. I used to give food to the ten kittens but searched Divine among them. My sister looked after the formalities, such as the registration process. But at the back of her mind, she knew my condition and hence was not at peace. In the afternoon, she went to our old rental home again to search for Divine. She looked around in the nearby places but in vain. When she returned, her face told me the result. I refused to talk or eat properly. Two days passed, but things didn’t change.

Soon, my sister was going to resume her job. She was on leave for the shifting process. It would be challenging since I had left my job for some reason. I had started blogging. However, my mind could not make any posts or think about developing my blog. After my sister resumed her job, my daily routine was like this: getting up, feeding the kittens, unpacking and arranging some things in the rooms, and then sitting blankly, staring at the walls or outside.

Rain was going to start.

My worry deepened. What would he do in the rain? How would he stay? He was more timid than the other ten kittens. How would he survive? Would he get food? The questions haunted me day and night.

Meanwhile, my sister went every day in the afternoon or evening searching for Divine. She asked the local people there if they had seen him, searched every corner, and asked the shops nearby if they had spotted him by showing his picture. My eldest sister and niece gave us an idea. They told me to post this on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp. I wrote a write-up, which we put on our WhatsApp status and Facebook posts. I had informed a few of my ex-students about this incident. My sisters and niece also informed their friends about
the same. With the hope that they might know someone in that area, we awaited their response.

One of my students suggested a good idea.

She and her brother said we would make posters stating basic information about the Divine, such as his age and description. We shall put his photo on the poster and give my sister’s and my sister’s contact numbers. We will put up these posters in the areas nearby. If anyone has seen Divine, he or she should contact us. We liked the idea, and my sister got the posters done. My student’s brother and my sister went to put up these posters. It was definitely not an easy task. Some watchmen refused to allow them to put up posters. Some asked many questions, such as, ‘Who are you people?’ ‘Why are you putting up these posters without proper permission?’ Some even scolded them to their faces. On knowing it was to find our cat, many of them co-operated. The posters were put near the notice boards of buildings. Also, it is on the walls of the lanes nearby.

Rains started.

Luckily, the frequency of the rains was lower in the initial days. My sister’s school had started. After leaving, she used to search for the Divine every day. One of her friends accompanied her many times. She and her friend put up more posters in nearby areas. They went into the neighbouring buildings where we had stayed and enquired in each home. Some answered politely while others were blunt and even got angry. It was sad that people did not care for animals.

Back at home, I continued with my routine.

I had forgotten entirely to smile or speak. Ultimately, it affected my mom and sister. They could not bear my silent existence. I was a chirpy and talkative person who laughed at small things aloud, heartily. After I lost my dog, I had already turned quiet. This incident pushed me into a dark corner where there was no hope, no life. Sitting in my main room, I used to stare at the view outside. Wondering where Divine must be, I used to talk to only one person: myself.
