Part 8 – Woven Fates

The soothing aura of Mayem Lake’s scenic beauty, in addition to the lovers’ presence, was just breathtaking. Angels arrived there in the disguise of butterflies to witness this view.

Angels arrived there in the disguise of butterflies to witness this view.

“Samiksha, I sometimes wonder how we arrived here. We barely knew each other. And now, we are bonded, forever. Isn’t it magical?”
“Yes, Karan. When I saw you at Benny’s office the other day, it did surprise me. How fate brought us together, coincidentally.”
“Hmm. I agree. But Samiksha, isn’t it strange that your mom is a claimant of the same ring my dad claims as his?”

Samiksha lifted her head from Karan’s shoulder and eyed him curiously.
“I never gave this thing a thought, Karan. How can a thing belong to two people?”
“Um, unless they are related.”
Karan and Samiksha dwelled on the words they had just uttered and pondered.
“Karan, what proof does your dad have? For the ring, I mean.”
“I haven’t seen it yet. In fact, after returning home, we both were supposed to look into this matter.”

“What about your mom?

Did she show you the proofs for the same?”
“Yes, she did show me her old photo in which she wore the ring. It’s quite visible that it’s the same ring shown on the TV.”
“Then I am rushing back to my home, Samiksha. I don’t know why. There is some mystery about this ring. I mean, it is related to our parents. Don’t you think so?”
“Even I have started getting butterflies in my stomach now. You go home and ask your dad for the details. It’s 5 pm now. We will meet later or call, alright?”
“Alright. That’s done then. See you later.” He hugged her tight, and they both left in the car.

As soon as Karan reached home, he made his dad sit down.
“What is it, son?”
“Dad, what proof do we have that the ring belongs to us?”
“Hmm. There is a concrete receipt from the shop from where I purchased it. Here it is.”
His dad handed over a paper to him, which Karan saw keenly.
“So you gifted it to her?”
Karan had a smile on his lips when he enquired.
“Yes, son. to my soul mate, who unfortunately was not your mom. After I gave this ring, as I told you, things took a wrong turn. After promising her to meet at our usual destination, I failed. She must have thought I betrayed her. My heart further sank into a sea of guilt and grief when I got the sad news.”

Karan could not control his anxiety.

“Which news, Dad?”
“I tried to reach her after that night when we decided to elope and marry. But got the information that she had left the place permanently. It was not the end of my despair. Another news reached me, which changed my life.” He paused and continued,
“That the ship she was sailing with her father sank due to a storm. Despite my efforts to find her whereabouts, I failed. I assumed she also became a victim of the people who drowned in that accident. That is it.”

After a silent pause, Karan asked him,
“Do you know the name of the ship in which she was sailing?”
He replied after a few seconds, “Maria.”
Karan started accumulating the facts and tried to figure out the coincidences in the series.
“Dad, what if she survived that accident?”
“What? How can you say this? No one knew her whereabouts. Why did you say this, Karan?”

“Because there is one more claimant for the Lover’s Stone.

“Who? Tell me, Karan.”
“One woman. She is my friend’s mother and claimed the ring was hers.”
Karan could hear the thudding of his father’s heart in the large living room. He placed his hand on his father’s.
“Dad, what are you thinking?”
“Karan, what if she is my. No, I don’t think this is true. Maybe I am overthinking due to anxiety.”
“Dad, relax. Do you want to see her?”
Without a second thought, his dad answered, “Yes, dear. Now.”

After returning home in Sirigao, Samiksha barged in to meet her mom. She made her sit on the sofa and looked curiously at her.
“What is it, Princess?”
“Mom, what if you found the love of your life again?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I mean the first love of your life.”
“Samiksha, what stupidity is this?”
“It’s not stupidity. It’s a simple question.”

“He had betrayed me, Sam.

I will never forgive him for what he did to me.”
“But do you know why he did not turn up that night?”
“What are you trying to say?”
“Why could he not make it, Mom? Are you aware of the reason?”
“No.”

“What was his name, Mom?”
“Samiksha, I need to finish the housework.” Saying this, she tried to get up, but Samiksha stopped her.
“Tell me his name, Mom, please.”

“Samar. Samar Khanna.”
