Part 11 – The Lovers

“That girl is none other than Samiksha.”

Karan was speechless, and his brain gave up on thinking. Several thoughts flooded his mind: Are Samiksha and my father the same person? Ultimately, it means Samiksha is my biological —– No. How would Samiksha react to knowing this? Will she be able to handle this truth? Would her mother also have disclosed the truth to her?

He went to his bedroom and rang Samiksha. But she did not answer.

Samiksha was

seated in a chair, all blank and devastated. Maria also told her about her relationship with Karan’s father.
“I am sorry, my baby. Your life is in a mess due to me.” Her sobs paused further words, and Samiksha enclosed Rose in her embrace.
“Mom, you first stop crying, and don’t ever blame yourself for anything”.
Samiksha consoled her mom, but she was broken inside by this devastating truth.
The night was long, silent, and filled with tears and sobs from many people.

Maria felt Karan and Samiksha could never be together because Rose would not allow it. Rose, as the turmoil of facing her past in this manner had opened several closets of memories.
Karan was struggling to make amends with himself, not knowing what to do, except that he would not be able to live without Samiksha.
Samiksha was shattered by the thought of Karan being her father’s son, and this truth humiliated her every second.

Suddenly, she realised she had not checked her phone for several hours. Finally, after locating it, she searched for one name in the missed calls and messages list- Karan’s.
Nearly 40 missed calls and messages inquired about her whereabouts. She did not know what to do. Apparently, the phone rang again. It was him.
Samiksha was conflicted about what to do. She kept the phone and tried her best to close her eyes, but Karan’s face, his eyes, their relationship, their moments flashed in front of her whenever she tried to do so.

Karan underwent the same.

When Samiksha did not take his call, he badly wanted to visit her and see how she was battling all of this. But he stopped. For fear of what if she refused to see him, meet him, or even talk? Karan was speechless, and his brain gave up on analysing.

Time slipped at an unusually slow pace, and finally, it was morning. Samiksha had decided to go to work, hoping that she would see him and that it would help her divert her attention for some time.
As she entered her cabin and sat on her chair, Karan entered.
Without delay, he approached her slowly and stood beside the chair. She looked at him once, and tears started falling from her beautiful eyes. Karan picked up Samiksha. He looked into her eyes and said,
“Look at me. First of all, you will not blame yourself for anything. I mean anything. Sometimes things happen, and we are helpless. Aunty must have told you what my mom disclosed to me yesterday, right?”

“Yes”, Samiksha spoke between the sobs.
“You stop crying first. We will see.”
And she freed herself from his embrace.
“What shall we see, Karan? How is this possible? We both have the same father, Karan. I can’t continue our relationship.”
Karan knew her very well and that no explanations or logic would pacify her at that moment.
He calmly left from there.

It was evening.

Samiksha was cooking in the kitchen, and Maria came in.
“Did you meet Karan? How is he? I have messed up everything between you two.”
Samiksha noticed Maria’s guilt. “Don’t blame yourself for anything, Mom. Everything is not in our hands. We are helpless in the hands of destiny.”

Later at night, the two were seated in the room.
“Miksha, when I was with your father, that was my life’s most beautiful period. I was alone in this world. Despite knowing that he was married, we were drawn to each other. Circumstances brought us together, and we were happy. He took very good care of me. He wanted to bring our child into this world. Your father always used to say that if anything happened to him over time, that child would become my support. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and we could not have our own child.”
Samiksha was listening to every word.
“Then he said we would adopt a child, who will be my support and caretaker in his absence.

And we adopted you.”

Samiksha looked at her mom, not knowing how to react. She got up and Maria took her in her arms.

“Mom? What did you say? Am I adopted?”

Samiksha held her by the shoulders and asked,
“Mom, did you adopt me? Am I not your child? Am I an orphan? Please tell me this is all just a bad dream. It’s not true.”

Maria stood still.
This was another blow to her since yesterday.
She was unable to comprehend what was going on and why.
However, part of her heart calmed down, as Karan was no longer related to her as a sibling. But the truth that she was adopted was painful and she suddenly felt alone in the world.
Her mom and his mother can never have a cordial relationship. Will she be able to have a relationship with her mother like before?
These thoughts, like wild horses, were speeding through her brain, and it was disturbing her.

Even after

Knowing how deeply Maria and Karan loved her, she was in tears. She finally uttered,
“So I am an orphan. Who were my parents, Ma?”
Maria was hurt by these words and she said to her angel,
“We don’t know, Miksha. When we went to the orphanage, your face pulled us at first glance. You became the apple of our eye, and he loved you a lot, Samiksha. I don’t know why this all had to happen with a sweet God’s child like you. But please remember that you are my only daughter and the reason to live. You have Karan with you. I have no one else Miksha.”

Saying this, Maria lost her balance and was about to collapse. Samiksha caught her.
“I’m sorry, Mom.” She made her sit on the sofa and quickly brought water for her. She sprinkled a few drops on her face.
” Mom.” Samiksha felt terrible that she had called herself an orphan in front of Maria. Later, when her mom slept after a long time, she stared at the sky.

In the silence of

the dark night, she uttered, “Why Universe? Why did you do this?”
Karan was staring at the same sky and prayed for Samiksha. All he wanted was for her to be happy and at peace. They both missed each other like hell. Each yearned to be near the other. But, circumstances did not favour this wish. Maybe they had to undergo all this pain to know the importance of each other in their lives.

The next day, Samiksha wanted to tell Karan what he was unaware of, but not on the phone. The matter was very delicate.

Karan’s mom was lost in her thoughts, and he started talking.
“Mom, when I met Samiksha, we were strangers. We fell in love like any two people do. Now, with some truth popping out of the past, I don’t understand why I should stay away from her. I . . “
“Stop it, Karan. First, that lady separated me from my husband, and her daughter is. “
“Mom, please.”
Karan got up and was profound.
“Don’t involve Samiksha in this at all, please. She is innocent.”

He left from there.

When he saw Samiksha’s missed call on his phone, he called her back.
“How are you?” he sounded dry and hurt.
“Can we meet? Now?” Samiksha asked Karan.
