Naiyya : Retro Gems

#2 Naiyya (1979)

About The Film

Naiyya, meaning boat, was a 1979 film directed by Prashanta Nanda. It starred Prashanta and Zarina Wahab and had great songs, my favourites being the famous “O goria re” and “Tera kuch khoya ho to.”

Sonu, The Golden Hearted Man

Sonu is the lead of the film. His dream is to build a beautiful boat. After all, he earns his livelihood by this means. One day, he notices a woman lying unconscious on the river bank. He saves her. Not only that, he brings her to his house, regardless of what people might think. His mother, played by seasoned actress Leela Mishra, happily agrees to give her shelter.

Love Blossoms

As days pass, Geeta notices Sonu’s innocence and pure heart and ultimately falls for him. She keeps these feelings deep inside her heart, thinking she is not worthy of him. On the other hand, he has massive respect for her and tries in all possible ways to make her comfortable.

Norms Of Society

Sonu’s best pal and his well-wishers notice that people in society have started talking about Geeta’s stay in Sonu’s house. He advises him to leave her back home, unaware of the evil relatives she has. When Sonu reaches along with Geeta, he finds she will suffer if left there and changes his mind.

His Responsibility

Considering Geeta’s responsibility, he looks for a suitable groom and finds one. Circumstances do not allow Sonu to do as he wishes, and Geeta’s marriage is called off. In the first place, she is not willing to marry anyone but Sonu. He worships her and cannot think of any other relationship than worshipping her.

Later, after twists and turns, Geeta tells him that he is the one she wants to spend her entire life with. He is shocked to hear this but finally accepts it, as love blossoms in his mind.

The film ends on a happy note, and they marry.

Beautiful Relationship

This movie’s highlight for me is their pure love for each other. Respect is essential to any relationship, and they both have this virtue. The fact that each doesn’t consider oneself worthy of the other shows their dignity and regard for each other.

See you all with another beautiful film. Do watch Naiyya., meaning Boat.
