Try to recollect some common topics we learned in our schools as children. One was ‘The uses of animals’. You all will agree with me. It used to be a complete chapter or a part of a chapter. I used to be quite enthusiastic while learning about it. The different colourful pictures of animals were so eye-pleasing. The uses of each animal were alongside the photographs as well. Cows give us milk. Dogs guard our house. Cats help to catch mice. Earthworms loosen the soil and thus aid in agriculture. Silk is obtained from silkworms, and honey from honeybees. Bullocks help in ploughing fields. Leather is obtained from the skin of animals. Fur coats are made from the fur of animals. At first, I found it informative in my childhood. But later, tags of being selfish and cold-hearted got attached to these uses, which I had learnt.
There is a famous saying: ‘Things are to be used, not people.’ But even animals are certainly not to be used. Growing up, I slowly developed a soft spot for these selfless, voiceless living creatures. Their independent nature and responsibility towards their family touched my heart. I felt that they led such a respectful, carefree life. Unless someone harmed them, I have never seen an animal harming others. But what have I learned about these beautiful babies while growing up? Just their uses?
It’s so sad
Since childhood, the fact that animals can be of various uses to us is inscribed on our minds. Later, some even start thinking, what else can I get from them? After all, they cannot speak. What harm can they do to me if I make them helpless first and then extract precisely what I want from them? Slowly and steadily, a mindset of using everyone starts developing. The thought appears nothing but cruel to me. But it is a sad truth that most of us grow up knowing the uses of animals. Then, why not learn how to care for them?
Why is caring for animals missing from education? If this value is instilled in children from birth, I am sure this world will be less cruel, cold, and heartless. Today, all people think about is I, Me, Mine. A caring, empathetic attitude towards these innocent, voiceless babies should be instilled in fragile minds from infancy itself.

Feeding a hungry bird or an animal,
stopping someone from hurting them should and must be witnessed by the children. Only then will they do the same. As charity begins at home, so do the acts of good deeds. Children follow the examples of their elders. Teach them the values of caring and empathy from infancy. Only then will they care for the animals and birds around them. Show them how beautiful patting a dog or cow on its head is. Tell them that feeding grains to the birds and providing them water is not only a noble deed, but it satisfies our soul too. A happy soul is a blessed soul. A blessed soul will also take care of his family and friends in the long run.
Let us root for topics like ‘Dogs: Selfless caretakers’, ‘Birds: The flying angels’, and ‘Our non-vocal friends—Animals and birds’ instead of ‘The uses of animals’ in the curriculum. If a curriculum developer is reading this, please think it over. Let us restart and make our children more sensitive than competitive. It’s better late than never.
