My excitement level was at its peak when I enrolled in the personality contest while working as a teacher. The anticipation of the upcoming rounds made me nervous and eager. The rounds finally began. But facing the vast audience could not overcome my anxiety. Determined, as always, my heart said, “Go for it.”
The first round was to introduce ourselves uniquely. After brainstorming with thoughts, I decided to recite a small introductory poem. We were given a time limit of 5 minutes to prepare for the same. The outcome was as follows. Though I don’t remember the exact words, here is whatever I remember.
Years ago, a flower bloomed in my parents’ garden.
It was a unique flower that could sing, dance, and compose poems.
Years later, she chose a profession to mould her future.
Lovingly, she was called by all her students as Hema teacher.
A sweet gesture of applause by everyone in the hall reduced my fear to a great extent. The next round was the Aptitude test round. We were given a list of questions and ten minutes to solve them. I finished my task and waited eagerly for the next round, which would decide the semi-finalists of this contest.

My favourite was the performance round. I presented a number, which was again appreciated a lot by all. After everyone’s performance, the semi-finalists were announced. Guess what? I had cleared the round. The upcoming round was the Question-and-Answer round, wherein the judges asked everyone a different question.
My question was, ‘What is your opinion about remixes?’
I answered what my heart spoke, once again. Certainly supportive of the originals, I stressed that musicians should compose something of their own instead of destroying the original tracks. After this round, finalists were announced. My heart was literally thudding as names were being read one by one.
It’s been my habit since childhood. Even after giving my best and delivering honestly, I get extremely tense when the results are announced. And, to my surprise, I made it to the finals.
Towards the end of the contest, the last round began. It was once again a Question Answer round, with a variation of the same question being asked to all the finalists. The last question of the contest was read out.
If you get a rebirth, who would you like to be reborn as?
We started penning our ideas on a paper provided, and we had a time limit of around 3 minutes. What entered my head first, my heart immediately approved, and I started writing it down. One by one, each of us read our answers. Some said they would like to be born as Mother Teressa, and others said the names of famous celebrities. Mine was as follows.
Given the chance of rebirth, I would like to be reborn as my mother. This will allow me to experience the joys I have given her in my lifetime. It will also make me feel the hurt and pain I caused repeatedly. I want to undergo that same pain. Also, the tears she shed for me should flow from my eyes.
No one else mentioned their mother in their answers. We waited for the results for some time. Finally, they announced the results. I came third in the contest, where nearly 30 other teachers participated.
A moment after the contest’s conclusion brought satisfaction and joy to my heart. One of the judges approached me, saying, “Your response in the last round deeply moved me. It brought back memories of my mother, and I was in tears. Your answer was really touching.”
This made my day. A mere contest helped me revisit how we treat our mothers and take them for granted. We have time to listen to our spouses, children, and friends, not mothers. I hope you all remember the sacrifices made by your mother. Keep her always in your prayers. See you all soon.
