#10 Chit Chor (1976)

Chit chor, meaning heart stealer. Set in the beautiful location of the village Madhupur, Chit Chor has every element to steal your heart. The charm of this movie lies in its simplicity.

Plot

Geeta (Zarina Wahab) is the only daughter of school headmaster Pitamber Chaudhari (A. K. Hangal). Her mother (Dina Pathak) wishes to marry Geeta to a suitable groom as soon as possible. Apparently, she has two elder married daughters. Naive and sweet, Geeta lives a carefree life, roaming around with her cute neighbour Dipu(Master Raju).

One day, they receive a letter from their married daughter in Mumbai. It says a suitable groom for Geeta is available. He is visiting Madhupur soon as an engineer. Both parents are excited about this acquaintance. Pitamber himself goes to receive the engineer. Soon, the newly arrived engineer sees his beautiful residence and gets a warm welcome at Geeta’s home. Her mother instructs Geeta to behave appropriately in front of him and take a bouquet of fresh flowers to his residence every day.

Geeta does this and takes Dipu with her. Soon, the trio forms a beautiful bond. Vinod, the assumed engineer, wins Geeta and Dipu’s hearts through his songs and charm. Very subtly, Geeta and Vinod develop feelings for each other.

The Twist

Things take a u-turn when Geeta’s mother receives another letter from her sister. It says the engineer will be arriving in the coming week. This news leaves Geeta’s parents in shock. They realise their folly of assuming someone else is the expected groom. Immediately, the mother tells Geeta to keep a distance from Vinod and to stop visiting his house. Innocent Geeta cannot understand the reason behind her mother’s practical decision and is devastated by the situation.

Finally, the engineer Sunil(Vijayendra Ghatge) arrives. He is drawn towards Geeta and looks forward to a future with her.

The Turmoil

Vinod learns that Sunil is the man Geeta’s parents chose for her. Undoubtedly, he is taken aback. The day of engagement arrives. Vinod decides to take a leave for a few days. Obviously, he avoids witnessing his beloved getting engaged to someone else.

Happy Ending

When Geeta learns about Vinod’s departure, she immediately leaves for the station. She also announces to everyone at home that she cannot stay without Vinod and will marry only him. Dipu accompanies her. But when she reaches the station, she is unable to locate Vinod, and the train leaves.

She spots Sunil, who takes her back home in his jeep. Back home, she is surprised to see a smiling Vinod with her parents and others. Sunil comes forward and happily announces her engagement to Vinod. He asks the Pandit about the rituals as he is not only a parent to Vinod but also his guardian, guide, senior, and everything else. The film ends on a happy note, with all the characters smiling.

Highlights

The first highlight of this film is the pure and deep love of Vinod and Geeta. Even though they are never shown speaking of their feelings to each other, the love they portray is divine and out of this world. It soothes your soul, and their moments keep you glued to the screen.

Second is the true friendship of Geeta and Dipu. They prove that friendship is free from age limits. Dipu helps her by bringing Vinod’s letter to her in one scene, showing his honesty in the relationship. He never leaves her side and supports her throughout the film. Though I wonder if it’s a film, as the scenes are so natural and the acting effortless.

Third is the scenic visuals of the village of Madhupur. They take you there, and you feel its beauty and serenity even at home.

Fourth are its songs. Be it the video or audio songs, both are equally captivating. My favourite is Gori Tera Gaon Bada Pyara. Others are Jab Deep Jale Aana, Tu Jo Mere Sur Main, and Aaj Se Pehle. Each is a masterpiece sung by maestros like Yesudas and Hemlata.
