#7 Piya Ka Ghar (1972)
Piya ka Ghar is a cult movie about a middle-class family. Released in 1972, it was directed by ace director Basu Chatterjee. It starred Anil Dhawan and Jaya Bhaduri in the lead roles.
Plot
The film revolves around the characters Ram and Malti. Ram lives in a chawl system in Mumbai, whereas Malti lives in a village. She is raised by her uncle, Gauri Shankar (Raja Paranjpe), with much affection. A matchmaker fixes their marriage against Gauri Shankar’s wishes. He is not in favour of sending Malti to a city.
After marriage, Malti comes to Mumbai. She finds it very difficult to adjust to Ram’s family. The reason is Ram’s congested small home, with only partitions to separate the entire room. Ram and Malti have to sleep in the kitchen at night. Ram’s brother Shiri (Suresh Chatwal) and his sister-in-law Shobha (Ranjita Thakur) are already accustomed to this small house.
Hindrances
Their sweet romance of newly wedded life is often interrupted by a flying plane, which Malti loves to watch or by one of the family members. Their close neighbours, Baburao (Kesto Mukherjee) and Kanhaiya (Mukri), frequently live in the home. The reason is to play chess with Ram’s father, Girdharilal (Agha). Ram’s mother, Laxmi (Sulochana Chatterjee), has lived there. So she is very much comfortable with these daily customs. But Malti finds the atmosphere very weird and, at times, irritating. Especially when she has to strive for the simple pleasures of her wedded life.
Moments
This movie’s highlight is Ram and Malti’s fantastic chemistry throughout. The small moments he steals to spend time with Malti are worth watching. He tries his best to make her smile in the not-very-comfortable atmosphere of his home. His friend Arun gives him advice to impress Malti, but in vain.
The touching scene for me is when the whole family is out for another reason. Arun advises Ram to keep Malti waiting to increase her yearning to spend time with him. So he spends the day loitering around with Arun. The melody Piya Ka Ghar Hai Ye, sung by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, is played then. When he returns, he is extremely disappointed. But it’s too late, as his family returns. The two of them miss a golden chance to spend time alone.
The superhit song Yeh Jeevan Hai, sung by Kishore Kumar, beautifully conveys Ram and Malti’s state of mind.
The Final Test
A crisis arises when Ram takes Malti to a lodge for some private moments. An unfortunate incident takes place there, leaving Malti shattered and heartbroken. She cries her heart out. On their return, they find a furious Gauri Shankar at home, further disturbed by seeing Malti in tears. He takes Malti back to the village and tells Ram to come there.
Ram’s family shows their larger-than-life-size hearts by compromising so that Ram and Malti are not separated. The parents decide to go on a pilgrimage. Ram’s sister-in-law decides to stay at her maternal house, while his brother decides to stay with his friend. Not only this, but one of their neighbours, Kanhaiya (Mukri), comes forward to help. He is ready to sell his taxi to arrange a flat for Ram and Malti.
Happy Ending
These warm gestures and the sacrifices of each touch Malti and Gauri Shankar. She requests her uncle to let her stay with her family. She brings to his attention how each one is ready to sacrifice for her happiness. Finally, Gauri Shankar melts and agrees. He blesses them and leaves.
The family members go out to see him off. Ram’s naughty sister-in-law locks the home, and finally, Ram and Malti have priceless moments together.
This cult movie is about the struggles of a middle-class family. The fantastic chemistry between Ram and Malti needs to be witnessed on a big screen. Their love, depicted by gestures and expressions in the film, is worth watching.
