The Longest Wait- 2nd Part

My sister searched for a new rental house in a short period. It was on the interior side of the main road. The buildings in the society, including ours looked very old. But we had to accept what was served in such a short period. We had no time to find intricate details of the house. Though the eleven kittens slowly tried to adjust themselves, we slowly started noticing the drawbacks of the house. Among quite a few, the biggest one was the water filling problem.

We learned that water can fill the compound during heavy rains and might enter the house. This threat was definitely actual for the ground-floor residents. Now, this was a significant complication. My sister and mom were worried as they were our guardians. What if there is constant heavy rainfall this year? If water enters the house, then what? We had not even unpacked yet. The things in the cartons would be destroyed if water entered the rooms. Instead of celebrating the joy of shifting to a new place, worries surrounded our minds every second.

In addition to that, insects started slowly coming out.

That house was locked for quite a long period, so insects like cockroaches and big spiders suddenly appeared in the kitchen and washrooms. Two doors did not close properly, and the geyser was not working. The wash basin looked very old. Its tap was broken. We had to use it carefully. As a result, we did not unpack all the boxes. We removed only the daily-use items. Somehow, our minds refused to unpack the boxes. We had no idea what was in store for us.

The house was 4 BHK. Kittens were initially reluctant to come out of their cages, but slowly, they started roaming freely. Four kittens were 7 months, and the remaining 7 were hardly 3 months. They stayed together, played and found a new joy in their new house. Of course, no need to say Divine had his own way of enjoying. He loved to sleep. While others were exploring, he used to be in dreamland in one of the cupboards. But worries enveloped our minds every second, especially mom and sister’s.

One day passed.

At night, Mom slept in one room. We two stayed with the kittens. Cats are nocturnal animals, so they were extremely active at night. Some mewed, and some investigated the new house. The next day, the same routine went on again. Now, we allowed the kittens to sit in the space of the window grills. They sat and enjoyed the view.

Being on the first floor, the ground was near. I had an instinct that one or two might jump and roam in the compound. But they didn’t. There were cats in the nearby area. If the kittens went into the surrounding areas, they might find other cats and stay there. But nothing of this sort happened. I wished my workload might be reduced if a few of them went into the lap of nature on their own.

Man proposes, and God disposes.

I had never felt this sentence so true in my entire life until then. My sister was on leave and helped me look after the kittens. But what would I do when she came back? My mom’s and sister’s worries were different from mine. When the rain started, what if the water entered our house?

During the second night, we saw the kittens playing with something unusual. After taking a closer look, we discovered it was the skeleton of a crab. We were shocked. On inspection, we noticed that the lower part of the wash basin was broken from behind. Maybe it came with the water flow. The drainage system was near our house. It was a big possibility that the skeleton had gone through some broken pipes underground.

This incident gave birth to a new fear in our minds. What if more insects and pests came like this during the rains? Only two days had passed, and we had lost our peace of mind. A huge, spacious four-room apartment had turned into a nightmare for all of us.

There was nothing in that house to keep us glued,

except for the vast space and comparatively less rent. But what about the concerns that ran through our minds, non-stop? On the third day, I decided to get some hibiscus flowers from the compound and offer them to God. As usual, my clouds of faith reappeared, and I started doing this ritual wholeheartedly. I even promised Him to continue with the same if He took away all our worries. Even before I had this give-and-take relationship with God. But God’s way of working is entirely different from what we plan and wish. He sees much ahead, whereas we just see what we want now.

We three made a decision. Shift to another house. Even if it seems weird, trust me, staying there was just unthinkable after what we faced. My sister started the hunt again. Calling up brokers and hunting for a rental home on the Internet began again. Four days had passed. She found a house near our earlier rental home by God’s grace. The worry of shifting again came in, along with the joy of leaving this weird place. Shifting means putting the poor kittens through that traumatic process once again. That too in a mere period of just 5 days. Certainly, we had no choice but to shift

again.
