Swami: Retro Gems

#1 Film: Swami (1977)

About The Film

Swami, a 1977 film, stars seasoned actors like Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Shashi Kala, and Utpal Dutt. Although I saw this movie long ago, every scene is still fresh.

This film’s highlight is the beautiful chemistry between the lead actors. Shabana Azmi played the role of Saudamini and Girish Karnad of Ghanshyam. She is called Mini in the whole movie. She is in love with Naren, played by another famous actor of that time, Vikram. Circumstances separate them, and she has to marry Ghanshyam, a wheat trader in a village.

Her marriage with Ghanshyam is against her wishes, so she is living a life that is thrust upon her. She refuses to converse or spend time with him.

She Falls For Him

But during her stay, she notices how Ghanshyam, the elder son of the house, has taken on the whole responsibility of his home. He strives to ensure everyone in the house is cared for, including Mini, who maintains distance from him.

She notices he is above human nature traits like envy, anger, frustration, anxiety, etc. His focus is on his duties and responsibilities. Ghanshyam’s nature evokes a sense of respect in Mini, which blossoms into love.

Later, when she gets a chance to start a new life with her old flame, Naren, memories of how Ghanshyam has treated her and others flash before her. She learns from Ghanshyam the virtues of forgiveness, sacrifice, and respect for others. She has given up the possibility of going back to Ghanshyam, as she has crossed the threshold of his home along with Naren after a bitter incident.

To her surprise, Ghanshyam comes to take her back from the railway platform to their home, thereby performing his duties as a husband. She is shocked to see how forgiving a person can be and finally goes back to her home with Ghanshyam.

Beautiful Moments

The beautiful moments between these two after the marriage, mainly after she develops respect for him, are worth watching. The dialogues are so deep and meaningful that I still remember all of them.

One of the night scenes shows her lying down on a mattress, as she isn’t willing to be close to him. He tells her, “It seems you are carrying a heavy burden on your chest. But a burden will be relieved only after talking it out.”

Wow, what a beautiful way to make your newlywedded wife comfortable. What a lovely display of emotions the leads display.
Swami, one of my favourite movies, is worth seeing. Do watch it, guys.

For foodies, this place is just right for you.
